9 Weeks Math Test & History of America

DSC_8717.jpg

Moving Beyond the Page 6-8 – Concept 3, Unit 2, Lesson 7: History of America Today we learned studied American history. We revisited the voyage of Christopher Columbus, which we had learned on Columbus Day back in October. We read about the Pilgrims, their voyage to the United States and how their history and life have shaped the American culture today. I doubt they imagined their celebration would turn into such an important American holiday and tradition. AA compared our lifestyle with that of a child living back in Plymouth Colony and noticed how different life is now as time and progress have gone on. RightStart Math, Level C – 9 Weeks Test Today AA took his Math’s 9-weeks test. Both his father and I are very happy to see [...]

American Culture

Moving Beyond the Page 6-8 – Concept 3, Unit 2, Lesson 6: American in Culture Today we learned about the American culture, about its symbols, leaders, music, and rich diversity. We discussed the meaning of freedom and how people all over the world appreciate the freedom that the United States offers its citizens and residents. We played a memory game matching famous American leaders to their good deeds, which AA thought was a lot of fun. We also looked at three classic American songs. I loved AA was able to play one of them on his keyboard. What a fantastic thing that he’s learned and continues to learn to read music.

Transportation in Culture

DSC_8702.jpg

Moving Beyond the Page 6-8 – Concept 3, Unit 2, Lesson 5: Transportation in Culture Today we reviewed the methods of transportation that people use and how they vary according to the geography and community who uses them. AA acted out several types of transport and got a kick out of the act. We noticed how our community relies heavily in our own cars for transportation, whereas in other countries, they use bicycles or simply walk to get around. And as usual, nothing does the writing trick better than the tent, it really does work wonders with AA. And this time, he was so happy to use his IKEA tent for the first time   Art We are so happy to have done an art project today. Roberto and I [...]

Different Religions

Recording his podcast "The Nightingale" by Hans Christian Andersen

Moving Beyond the Page 6-8 – Concept 3, Unit 2, Lesson 3: Different Religions Today we learned about different religions around the world and how they shape the culture of a community. We learned about special holidays in the Muslim, Christian, and Jewish religions: Ramadan, Easter, Christmas, and Hanukkah. We created math graphs documenting data of the religions practiced by members of the community. Lastly, AA wrote about his own beliefs. We differentiated between being spiritual and being religious.   Podcasting AA has been creating his own podcast reading “The Nightingale” by Hans Christian Andersen. He started with great enthusiasm and so did I. I plan to upload the podcast as soon as I can. Because of copyright issues, I believe, we can’t just upload anything. Fortunately, there’s plenty of [...]

Traditions Part 2

Creating a beautiful Kwanzaa Placemat

Moving Beyond the Page 6-8 – Concept 3, Unit 2, Lesson 2: Traditions Today we continued to learn about the traditions of people in the community. We studied about the 5 de Mayo celebration and how important it is for Mexican Americans. We read about it online and watch a video on youtube about 5 de Mayo. We then learned about Kwanzaa and what this holiday symbolizes today to African Americans. AA made a very pretty Kwanzaa placemat with bright colors and patterns.     We learned about the Chinese New Year and the foods that have special meanings during this traditional celebration. We revisited our own western celebration of Christmas and our own favorite holidays.

Traditions Around the World

Solving the problem that yielded the equation 13 x 2 = 26

Moving Beyond the Page 6-8 – Concept 3, Unit 2, Lesson 2: Traditions Today we learned about different traditions around the world and how many of these traditions are related to religious holidays. We reviewed the celebrations of Thanksgiving, Christmas, the 4th of July and other holidays that have special meaning to people in the community.   RightStart Math Level C, Lesson 41 We continue to study and understand multiplication using the abacus and other props. Today AA was able to put together the equation 13 + 13 = 26, and its equivalent 13 x 2 = 26 using his beloved Thomas the Tank train and his friends. Arranging them visually as RS likes to instruct, it was very straight forward to solve the problem.

Is Moving Beyond the Page a stand-alone curriculum?

Hi,  I love your blog and it is so nicely put together!  I am considering MBTP and also Sonlight.  Do you think MBTP could stand alone as it’s own curriculum?  I also just bought AAS and will be starting right start math Level B.  My son can read at 2nd-3rd grade so I do want something challenging and academically rigorous.  Also, i wondering how you feel about MBTP’s Language arts?  Thanks so much! Nancy    Hi Nancy, Thank you so much for your lovely words. I’m so happy you’ve found my blog useful, and so appreciate you letting me know I do think MBTP can stand alone on its own, provided you add the Math to your lessons (which you are, and by the way, we *love* RightStart Math too). DSC_8387.jpg

Moving Beyond the Page 6-8 – Concept 3, Unit 1, Final Project: Geography of a Continent, Part 6 – Europe We are ready to conclude our series of continental posters today. We do have one left to do: Antarctica, but decided to tackle that one another time, if at all. It has been so much fun to learn about all the continents in the world. We now wish to visit them all … something to look forward to, right?

Stenciling Australasia

Moving Beyond the Page 6-8 – Concept 3, Unit 1, Final Project: Geography of a Continent, Part 5 – Australia and Oceania Today we worked on the Australasia poster, the fifth one yet. This one was very easy and quick to do as there is only one major but rather small land mass, the others are smaller to tiny islands around the Pacific Ocean.

MBTP Final Project: Geography of a Continent, Part 4 – Africa

drawing map of Africa

Moving Beyond the Page 6-8 – Concept 3, Unit 1, Final Project: Geography of a Continent, Part 4 – Africa We continue creating posters for the all the world’s continents. AA has already done his initial poster on Asia, which was the one he chose to comply with the unit’s final project. He then did North America, South America, and today he’s working on Africa. He’s still enjoying this activity very much. Both, me and my husband are happy to encourage his enthusiasm for Geography and drawing posters.
