Today’s lesson at Deering’s Eco Academy was all about algae. After our initial lecture the kids got to jump in the water to collect all types of algae and seagrass and then paste them in sheets covered with wax paper. The finished product has made its way triumphantly into our Science notebook/binder. We learned that algae is found everywhere, from mayonnaise, to shampoos, shaving creams, cleaners, yogurt, salad dressings, pastry fillings, syrups, milk shakes, egg nog, frostings, ice cream thickening, dessert gels, and so many more. I have great appreciation for algae now –they make our lives sweeter! (pun completely intended) 😉
We really love our hands-on time at Deering, can’t beat learning about science and nature at such a beautiful natural place.
